Engineered flooring materials deliver a calm and homely ambience at Folk co-living development – Earlsfield, London
Offering 315 studio apartments plus expansive amenities, communal areas and co-working spaces across two buildings, Sunday Mills co-living development in Earlsfield, South-West London, presents Folk Living’s second unique scheme to open within the last two years – following the success of The Palm House, Harrow. The warm and inviting interior scheme utilises Robur engineered wood flooring together with Pergo wood-look laminate flooring from Domus, helping deliver a sense of timelessness together with a calm and homely ambience for residents – designed by Assael and Atypical Practice.
Balancing design, durability and sustainability requirements
Designed around the brand’s key pillars of community and connection to encourage social interaction and the formation of new friendships and relationships, Sunday Mills offers a variety of shared spaces and amenities for residents alongside individual studio apartments, presenting a warm and inviting environment to reside, relax and work in. Domus worked with the project design team at Atypical Practice to select suitable engineered flooring materials for both the communal areas and apartment interiors – balancing design, durability and sustainability requirements in addition to tight budget and programme management considerations at the specification and fit-out stages.
Sustainably produced, PEFC certified engineered wood flooring – communal & co-working spaces
Within the shared areas, Domus’ Robur Fundamental 180 engineered wood flooring proved the perfect design option to align with the interior scheme and other project requirements – with 750 sqm used in the final scheme across the primary co-working hub space, meeting rooms, feature staircase, mezzanine floor and living room zones, helping create a seamless design aesthetic throughout.
Specified in a light oak colour with subtle white accent (WDRO 801), its soft, natural tone delivers the perfect fit for the scheme’s overall palette; with a brushed finish providing a suitably textured wood grain texture. A UV matt lacquer surface treatment ensures a low-gloss, natural finish resistant to stains and marks, combining the look and soft matt feel of a natural oiled surface with the durability and ease of maintenance of a lacquered floor, well-protected for busy use.
Manufactured in Europe, Domus’ Robur wood flooring utilises cutting-edge production technologies that accommodate critical environmental aspects into all production phases. The raw wood used to make Domus’ Robur collection derives from PEFC-certified timber – a transparent and independent certification system for ensuring sustainable, environmentally friendly forest management. Performed in accordance with strict regulations, PEFC-certified ‘forest certification’ ensures that both suppliers and end-users secure responsibly sourced timber.
Enabling fast and easy installation, Robur engineered wood flooring can be installed in one of two ways via a simple installation system using high-precision connection technology – Floating: fast and glueless method; and Glue-down: a long-lasting method that reduces movement and footfall sound – making it ideal for projects with tight installation schedule restraints.
Durable, stylish and sustainable wood-effect laminate flooring – apartment interiors
The studio apartments use Domus’ Pergo Laminate wood-look flooring in a natural warm tone and silk matt finish, delivering a clean, minimal design which allows guests to personalise their own private spaces. Using over 5000sqm throughout the open plan living, kitchen & bedroom zones in all 315 studio apartments, Domus’ Pergo Laminate wood-look flooring instils a soft, homely ambience whilst offering an incredibly hard-wearing, easy-to-clean and maintain surface finish.
An exceptionally practical, natural-look flooring material available at low price points, Pergo Laminate planks reproduce the deep grooves of natural brushed wood to perfection, presenting a soft matt finish which flawlessly replicates that of real wood. This authentic, true-to-nature wood effect surface is produced via an innovative, creative ‘registered embossing’ technique, imparting the organic warmth of natural wood flooring. Pergo Laminate boasts TitanX™ surface and AquaSafe technology, together with dense core material, creating a high-impact resistance, closed surface in tandem with a tight click-joint to fully protect the floor against water and other spillages. With a Bfl-s1 fire class rating, Pergo Laminate flooring delivers exceptional design together with high-level durability, making it an ideal alternative to natural wood in well-used areas.
With an average delivery time of 2 - 3 weeks, Pergo Laminate is the perfect material for projects which require materials to site quickly. To further aid project completion times, laminate planks are ready to lay immediately – requiring no pre-treatment or preparation. Meanwhile, an innovative PerfectFoldTM 3.0 click system presents three simple, straightforward installation methods – ensuring minimal installation time and costs.
Produced in Europe by manufacturers Unilin, the raw wood used to make Pergo Laminate flooring is PEFC certified, with 100% of the wood used to make the finished product either recycled or byproducts from other industries. As an environmentally responsible manufacturer, Unilin invest in energy-efficient production whilst seeking new ways to recycle, reduce and renew throughout the laminate manufacturing process. Presenting a negative embodied carbon figure of under 3kg per sqm, Pergo Laminate is a notably sustainable hard flooring material – making it an ideal choice for projects designed with sustainability in mind.
Supporting responsible living & positive social impact
With responsible living and positive social impact at the brand core, aligning the flooring materials specified for the final scheme with Folk's sustainability and aesthetic design principles was essential. Not only do the soft natural tones and textures of the engineered flooring materials fit the intended design aesthetic to perfection, the selected options from Domus present strong sustainability credentials in terms of manufacturing and product lifecycle – offering high-level durability to maximise in-use phase whilst allowing easy, on-site installation and maintenance to help minimise the project’s overall carbon footprint.
