Trend 26/27 Proto/Synthesis
Design in 2026-27 is shaped by three parallel trends that respond to our evolving cultural needs. These trends reflect a shift away from generic minimalism toward design that values material substance, narrative depth, and emotional resonance – surfaces that anchor spaces, stage scenes, and express personal identity. They signal deeper cultural recalibrations and point toward a future where surface design plays an increasingly central role in shaping how spaces are felt, remembered, and valued.

Proto/Synthesis
In our digital-dominated world, Proto/Synthesis responds to a need for spaces that feel safe and grounded. The trend connects with a growing focus on resources and circular design, exploring how new technology can work alongside traditional materials to blend digital advances with natural textures.

The aesthetic moves fluidly between the primal and the futuristic, fusing the handcrafted with the industrial and celebrating the geological forms that spark new narratives. It features cave-like sanctuaries where material and simulation blend, restoring authenticity to visually saturated lives.

The palette and textures are quarried from nature – chalk, ash, limestone, clay, and basalt – enriched with deep oxidised reds and terracotta tones. Expressive patterns inspired by veining and aggregates feel structural rather than decorative, punctuated by striking artificial hues like steel grey, chrome, and inky black.
