Creating a contemporary industrial flat within a historic Notting Hill building

Standing in the beating heart of Notting Hill, Portobello Road, is the Old Telephone Exchange building — now converted into apartments. New York-based couple John & Charlotte took on the challenge of renovating one that hadn't been updated in over 30 years and turn it into a desirable rental property.

"We wanted to create a New York meets London vibe — luxury with a hint of minimalism," says John. "We needed it finished to the highest possible standard to make it the most attractive rental property."

Engineered Wood: the perfect design solution for the budget

The clients wanted to ensure the products specified highlighted the property's openness and large floor space and kept in sync with their light and minimal design scheme. Engineered Wood Pergo 190 was chosen for the floor throughout the flat, seamlessly flowing from room to room.

"We wanted wide plank oak floors, but the solid wood would have blown our budget. Domus' Pergo was the perfect solution.", says John. The cool, pale tone of the engineered wood achieved the desired open aesthetic, whilst still providing the character of real wood, and providing the added benefit of durability. "Domus allowed us to create a beautiful space that potential renters swooned over, all while staying in budget. All of our potential renters were wowed by the finished flat, and it ended up renting before we could even put it on the market."

Porcelain stone & marble effect products help create a minimal, high-end aesthetic

In keeping with the luxury, modern industrial vibe that John & Charlotte desired for the property, Domus helped specify porcelain products that stayed within budget without sacrificing the design. Select Marmi, a porcelain marble range, was chosen for the kitchen splashback, island and the master bathroom's feature wall.

"We wanted a marble kitchen stone, but the price and maintenance were prohibitive. Select Marmi was the perfect solution. It looks exactly like marble but without the worry/maintenance of the natural product.", John tells us. For the second bathroom, Gubi was chosen; a simple and elegant product with high functionality that is reminiscent of polished concrete, further supporting the contemporary industrial style. "Because we were rehabbing this property to let, we needed materials that were within our budget, looked amazing, but were also durable enough for a rental property. We found our solution with Domus."

When we asked the clients what they would say to someone considering specifying Domus products for a residential project, they told us, "We plan to do more renovation projects in the future and we will only use Domus. The customer service was outstanding. They quickly fixed a broken tile delivery without issue. The look and quality of the materials is fantastic, exactly what we needed for our project."
